What's new

  • Pike remained unconscious and on a ventilator on Oct. 3.
  • Hospital staff were trying to remove pentobarbital from her system.
  • Governor Bill Lee halted Tennessee executions for the rest of 2026.
  • Pike’s lawyers sought preservation of evidence from the procedure.

Christa Pike remained unconscious and on a ventilator in hospital on Oct. 3 after Tennessee failed to execute her by lethal injection, according to her lawyers. The BBC reported that she was critically ill at a hospital in Nashville, where staff were working to save her life and clear pentobarbital from her system.1236

Intravenous access problems

Pike’s attorneys said the execution team failed to recognise that intravenous lines had been placed incorrectly or that veins had blown. They said pentobarbital consequently entered her body, at least in part, rather than being delivered into her bloodstream. The Straits Times and CBC reported that she had received two doses during the execution attempt.1245

The BBC reported that prison officials used at least seven needles while trying to establish intravenous access and that one needle was bent at a 90-degree angle when removed. Pike’s lawyers had warned Tennessee officials and the courts before the execution that gaining intravenous access could be difficult, citing her small veins and thrombocytosis, the BBC said.345

Two days after Tennessee administered the drug, Pike remained in critical condition and had significant injuries to both arms, according to reports citing her attorneys. She was unconscious, intubated and receiving breathing support. Medical staff were attempting to preserve her life and remove the drug from her system.1345

Evidence request and state review

Pike’s lawyers filed an emergency request asking for the preservation of physical, written and electronic material connected with the execution. They also sought commutation of her death sentence after the procedure failed. The filing described the intravenous-access problems and Pike’s condition after she was taken to hospital.2345

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee said the execution had “followed the state's established protocol”. Even so, he paused all additional executions in Tennessee through the end of 2026 and commissioned an outside inquiry into the incident. The episode was Tennessee’s second failed execution of the year, according to The Straits Times and CBC.245

Murder conviction

Pike was convicted over the 1995 killing of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer. Pike was 18 at the time of the killing and was sentenced to death in 1996, when she was 20. According to reports, Slemmer had a satanic emblem cut into her chest.1345

Had the execution been completed, Pike would have been the first woman put to death by Tennessee in more than 200 years. The Guardian reported that the previous execution of a woman in the state occurred in 1820, although that specific year was not independently supported elsewhere in the dossier.1245

Why it matters

For readers in Europe, the case offers a current account of how lethal injection is being administered in a US state and of the legal response when an execution fails. Tennessee’s decision to suspend further executions in 2026 and commission an outside review places the procedure under formal scrutiny.245
