New films: TANGO PRO 3, Wirbel, LINKIN PARK: UNSHATTER and Rolling Loud
This week’s cinema releases range from Czech and Slovak dramas to an international music film and a festival comedy. Critics single out Wirbel’s relative strength among recent Czech releases, while responses to the international titles are mixed.
A roundup of new releases and their reviews. We have not seen, heard or read the works ourselves: the verdicts are those of the critics cited.
Four films are in this week’s roundup, led locally by TANGO PRO 3 and Wirbel.
- TANGO PRO 3 entered cinemas on 1 October.
- Wirbel opens on 8 October.
- LINKIN PARK: UNSHATTER opened 30 September.
- Rolling Loud: Bez zábran is now in cinemas.
The film week of 8 October brings two releases from Slovakia and Czechia alongside LINKIN PARK: UNSHATTER (Unshatter) and Rolling Loud: Bez zábran (Rolling Loud). The local films place television spectacle and an unsettling landscape at their centre; the international entries turn to a band story and festival-set comedy.123
Slovakia and Czechia
This week’s Slovak and Czech selection pairs Lenka Kny’s TANGO PRO 3, set around a television dance competition, with Tomáš Hubáček’s Wirbel, a Czech-Slovak fiction feature rooted in the terrain of the České středohoří region.123
TANGO PRO 3
Lenka Kny wrote and directed TANGO PRO 3, which entered cinemas on 1 October. Its story brings Julie and Kristián together through a television dance competition: Julie is partnered with Kristián, who wants to return to the top and salvage his career, while Viki, his former partner, becomes part of a shifting alliance in which support and personal ambition can coexist.3
The film frames its dance-floor drama against a television show run by a producer focused on viewing figures. Kny combines conventional film storytelling with a visually stylised world of television broadcasts, using choreography to draw out relationships, rivalry, uncertainty and emotion. The cast includes Kristýna Boková as Julie, Ján Koleník as Kristián and Helena Dvořáková as Viki.3
Wirbel
Tomáš Hubáček’s 97-minute fiction feature Wirbel arrives in cinemas on 8 October. His feature-length directing debut follows Martin, played by David Švehlík, as he leaves the city for a decaying house in the České středohoří landscape in search of a lost sense of direction. When Agnes, played by Judit Pecháček, appears at his doorstep, an ancient danger concealed in the soil begins to stir.12
The Czech-Slovak film presents the countryside as a living presence that remembers. Hubáček also composed its music, incorporating such sounds as damaged church organs and a zither; the score involved Petr Linhart and Jarda Svoboda, while Alan Soural served as cinematographer.2
International
The international releases move from a film centred on Linkin Park to Rolling Loud: Bez zábran (Rolling Loud), a comedy built around the chaos and particular atmosphere of a music festival.1
LINKIN PARK: UNSHATTER (Unshatter)
Joseph Hahn’s LINKIN PARK: UNSHATTER (Unshatter) opened in cinemas on 30 September. It is this week’s international music-focused release and is available in cinemas.1
Rolling Loud: Bez zábran (Rolling Loud)
Jeremy Garelick’s Rolling Loud: Bez zábran (Rolling Loud) is in cinemas this week. The release is a festival comedy, drawing its setting and comic situations from the disorder and distinctive atmosphere of a large music event.1
