What's new

  • Harmanpreet Kaur announced her resignation as India's all-format captain on October 6, 2026
  • BCCI confirmed Smriti Mandhana as the new full-time white-ball captain the same day
  • The announcement followed a meeting with BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, coach Amol Muzumdar and Mandhana
  • Kaur said she intends to keep playing for India as a batter

Harmanpreet Kaur stepped down as captain of India's women's cricket team across all formats on October 6, 2026, ending a tenure that included the country's first global women's title. India's cricket governing body, the BCCI, confirmed Smriti Mandhana as her successor in the full-time white-ball captaincy role that same day.148

Resignation

Kaur confirmed the decision in a statement, saying: "Today, I step down as captain of the Indian Women's Cricket Team across all formats." She described it as a difficult choice taken with a sense of resolution rather than regret.45

She described leaving the role as an emotional moment that nonetheless brought her peace. She explained that this sense of calm came from her confidence that the team was well positioned, and acknowledged that leading the side had sometimes meant setting aside her own form and development to prioritise the group's needs.56

A long tenure

Kaur first captained India in 2012, according to the BBC, before taking over the T20 side in 2016. She assumed full ODI and Test charge in 2022 after Mithali Raj's retirement, and was described by several outlets as becoming India's all-format leader by 2023.1245

Most sources put her captaincy record at five Tests, 51 ODIs and 155 T20 internationals, though that tally was disputed by one outlet. Sky Sports separately cited a total of 211 matches captained across formats. Al Jazeera described her as the first cricketer, male or female, to lead a side in more than 150 T20I matches.1362

World Cup and other titles

Under her captaincy, India secured its maiden global women's cricket title by beating South Africa in the final of the 2025 50-over World Cup, hosted on Indian soil. Reports described her as one of only five Indian captains, alongside figures such as Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni, to have lifted a World Cup.345

Sky Sports also credited her leadership with consecutive Asian Games gold medals, the most recent secured via a 147-run win over Sri Lanka in the final. The team had earlier taken silver at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where Kaur scored 65 runs in a final India lost to Australia, and reached the final of the 2020 T20 World Cup as well as the semi-finals in 2018 and 2023.3457

Her final assignment as Test captain was a 270-run victory over England at Lord's, which Sky Sports said was the first women's Test staged at the ground. More recently, India exited the T20 World Cup at the group stage, failing to reach the semi-finals for a second successive edition, according to the BBC.31

Succession

The BCCI announced Smriti Mandhana, 30, as the new full-time white-ball captain. Mandhana described taking on the leadership role as a deeply meaningful privilege. She said wearing the India jersey had always held great significance for her, and she credited Harmanpreet for everything she had contributed during her years as captain.81

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said Mandhana "has grown into one of the most experienced players," while board figure Mithun Manhas congratulated her on being "entrusted with the responsibility of leading the Indian Women's Cricket Team." Kaur's decision was reported to have come a day after she met Saikia, and the day before the announcement she met Mandhana and head coach Amol Muzumdar in Guwahati.821

Reaction and what comes next

Former India players paid tribute to Kaur's leadership. Shikhar Dhawan said: "Leadership is never just about the title, it's about the impact you leave behind," adding that she had "given Indian cricket a lot to be proud of." Yuvraj Singh wrote that she had "carried it all with pride."45

Kaur said she plans to continue representing India as a batter, telling supporters she was eager to return to playing purely for her love of the sport. Captaincy ends. The journey continues." India are due to host Zimbabwe for three T20 internationals and three ODIs in October.741

Why it matters

The leadership change marks a generational shift for one of the sport's most successful women's teams, which has reached three major global finals under a single captain in under a decade. For European audiences following the sport through broadcasters such as Sky Sports, the transition coincides with India's qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, underlining the growing international profile of women's cricket.36
