Harry Kane wins Ballon d’Or and remembers Tottenham in his London speech
The Bayern Munich and England striker finished ahead of Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal. His acceptance speech also looked back to the people who helped him get there.
An anecdotal column: what is spreading online right now. The moment itself is verified in independent sources, but this is not news reporting and the rules of the news sections (several independent outlets) do not apply.
Kane’s Ballon d’Or victory came with an emotional acknowledgment of those who helped him.
- Kane accepted the award at the London Palladium.
- Mbappé and Yamal finished behind him.
- His speech included thanks to Tottenham.
- Conflicting website pages did not change the confirmed result.
Harry Kane had the trophy, but his acceptance speech made room for others. The Bayern Munich and England forward received the 2026 Ballon d’Or at the London Palladium on October 26, then expressed gratitude to his family, fellow players, coaches and fans, as well as the people at Tottenham who influenced his career.1
What happened
Kane finished ahead of Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal to take the men’s award. The Independent, Sky Sports and UEFA report the victory; their accounts also credit him with 73 goals for club and country during the season recognised by the prize.123
The London speech turned from the achievement to the journey behind it. According to The Independent, Kane spent 19 years at Tottenham before joining Bayern Munich in 2023.1
He also emphasised the contribution of his teammates rather than presenting the award as a solo accomplishment. The Independent records his words: “This is a trophy that we celebrate, not me.” Its account describes an emotional speech that included thanks to his family, players, coaches and supporters.1
Why it spread
Kane accepted the award as a Bayern player after spending 19 years at Tottenham. The speech supplied a direct acknowledgment of that earlier chapter, rather than leaving supporters to draw the connection themselves.1
Congratulations also extended beyond his former club. Sky Sports reports messages from England head coach Thomas Tuchel and Prince William, both describing the achievement as deserved. Those particular messages are attributed to Sky Sports here because the dossier does not provide independent corroboration for them.2
There was a visible celebration beyond the acceptance speech, too. Sky Sports says Kane was celebrated with special lighting on two landmarks: the arch at Wembley and the Allianz Arena, Bayern’s home stadium. The same report places his win after a long English wait, identifying Michael Owen’s 2001 award as the previous English victory.2
What is true
The core result is supported by multiple accounts: Kane won, with Mbappé and Yamal behind him. The Independent and Le Parisien identify the venue as the London Palladium. UEFA’s account also includes the full top ten and the other winners from the ceremony.1234
The website coverage was less straightforward. Sky Sports reports that separate articles naming Kane, Yamal and Mbappé as winners appeared on the award’s website and were removed before Kane was confirmed. Le Parisien also reports confusing apparent winner pages. The dossier does not establish why those conflicting pages appeared.24
There is also an inconsistency in the supplied verification labels: the Owen comparison appears in reporting but is listed among the dossier’s unresolved items. It should therefore remain an attributed Sky Sports claim here, rather than an independently settled detail. That limitation does not extend to Kane’s victory itself.213

Editors' commentary
The editors' view, not news reporting.
An individual trophy can still make room for a collective thank-you. The warmth of this moment lies in Kane looking back while accepting recognition for where he is now.
