What's new

  • Meta launched Meta Enterprise Platform and named CJ Desai chief enterprise platform officer
  • MongoDB confirmed Desai's immediate departure and reinstated Dev Ittycheria as interim CEO
  • MongoDB shares fell as much as 17-18% in the hours after the announcement
  • Analysts gave mixed readings of the timing, one day before MongoDB's investor day

Meta Platforms said on September 28, 2026 that it has hired Chirantan “CJ” Desai, until then chief executive of MongoDB, to lead a new enterprise platform business, a move that triggered an immediate leadership change and a steep stock decline at the data services company.124

A new pillar for Meta

Meta announced the launch of Meta Enterprise Platform, a business intended to bring the company's artificial intelligence technology to corporate customers and developers, and said Desai would serve as chief enterprise platform officer reporting to founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg.17

According to Meta, the new unit will include products such as Muse, Meta Business Agent, the Muse API and Muse Code, extending tools already used inside Meta to outside businesses. Muse, a personal AI assistant capable of tasks such as sending emails and booking travel, had been launched by Meta earlier in September and has since climbed rankings on the Apple App Store and Google Play.156

Zuckerberg described the initiative as the company's next major pillar. "Today we are starting the next major pillar of our business, Meta Enterprise Platform," he said, adding that superintelligence would create new opportunities for individuals and businesses.78

Desai said the platform reflected a broader shift he expects across industries. "Over the coming years, AI will fundamentally redefine how organizations of all sizes innovate," he said, adding that Meta was positioned to combine advanced models with agent technology.71

MongoDB scrambles to replace its chief

MongoDB confirmed that Desai stepped down as president and CEO effective immediately to take the senior role at Meta. The company said its board had retained an executive search firm to identify a permanent successor and named Dev Ittycheria, who had led MongoDB for eleven years before Desai succeeded him, as interim president and CEO.421

MongoDB chairman Tom Killalea said Ittycheria was the right person to steady the company. "MongoDB's business is strong, and there is no better person to take on the role of President and CEO in the interim than Dev Ittycheria," he said, citing Ittycheria's continued involvement as an active board member.4

Ittycheria said he was ready to resume the role. "I'm honored to step back into the President and CEO role at MongoDB," he said, adding that he had "enormous confidence in the opportunity ahead." MongoDB said it has more than 70,000 customers and that roughly 75% of the Fortune 100 use its products, and it reaffirmed its guidance for the third quarter and full fiscal year 2027.4

According to CNBC, Desai had taken over from Ittycheria in November 2025 and had been in the chief executive role for less than a year before his exit.2

Markets and analysts react

MongoDB shares tumbled in morning trading, falling by figures reported as 17% to more than 20% depending on the source, as investors weighed the sudden leadership vacancy.2356

Brokerage Piper Sandler said it still viewed MongoDB's underlying position as sound. "While the departure is disappointing, we believe MongoDB remains well-positioned strategically and view the share-price reaction as overdone," the firm said.56

Other analysts were more cautious about the disruption. William Blair said the change in leadership created more questions than answers, according to NBC News, while Bank of America analysts described the timing, a day ahead of MongoDB's investor meeting, as clearly negative. NBC News also reported that Desai's departure was not the result of any disagreement with MongoDB.9

According to Futu News, Wall Street was caught off guard by the timing of the move, which came the day before MongoDB's scheduled investor day.8

Why it matters

MongoDB's software underpins operations at large companies, so an abrupt leadership change and a steep share-price move carry implications for enterprise technology customers and investors. Meta's push into enterprise AI also signals intensifying competition among major technology firms for corporate AI customers.24
