Perseverance sets off-Earth driving distance record on Mars

NASA says its Perseverance rover has travelled farther on another world than any vehicle in history. The rover’s mission at Jezero Crater has been extended to about the end of 2028.

What's new

  • Perseverance has surpassed Opportunity’s previous Martian driving-distance record.
  • NASA says the rover now holds the off-Earth surface driving record.
  • The mission has approval to explore Jezero Crater’s rim through roughly 2028.

NASA’s Perseverance rover has set a new distance record for a vehicle operating on the surface of a world other than Earth, the agency said on Oct 12, after travelling across Mars during its exploration of Jezero Crater.12

A new benchmark on Mars

Perseverance has driven farther than any other vehicle beyond Earth, overtaking the previous Mars distance mark set by NASA’s Opportunity rover. Reuters reported that Opportunity travelled 28.06 miles, or 45km, between 2004 and 2018. The Straits Times reported that Perseverance had covered 45.2km since its arrival on Mars in 2021, although that precise total was reported by one source.12

The milestone came about five and a half years into Perseverance’s mission, which is investigating whether Mars once offered conditions suitable for microbial life. Its work is centred on Jezero Crater, a site believed to have held a lake basin billions of years ago after being flooded with water.123

Autonomous route planning

NASA credited Perseverance’s AutoNav capability with a major part of the rover’s progress. According to Steven Lee, the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory project manager for Perseverance and Curiosity, the rover uses images of the ground ahead to create a three-dimensional map and choose a route towards its destination. Reuters reported that its Vision Compute Element can process imagery and operate the self-driving software for much of a journey.12

The Straits Times and Reuters reported that about 90% of Perseverance’s drives are autonomous, a figure presented in the reports as part of NASA’s account of the mission. The rover has been travelling towards Idubi through terrain known as Lac de Charmes, beyond Jezero Crater’s western rim.12

Mission continues at crater rim

NASA has approved an extension of the mission to investigate Jezero Crater’s rim until roughly the end of 2028, Reuters reported. Some rim areas may previously have contained hydrothermal systems, with warm or hot groundwater, according to the report. Lee said such locations could help researchers assess environments that may have been favourable to life.12

NASA has said Perseverance’s engineering hardware and scientific instruments remain in excellent condition, with redundant systems still available. Lee said an assessment concluded that the rover’s systems could function well into the 2030s and perhaps longer. The agency is also testing its mobility system for driving 100km or more; Reuters reported that relevant hardware is being tested to an equivalent of 150km to 300km.12

Perseverance has also reported a potential biosignature, unveiled in 2025, which the Straits Times described as the mission’s most significant achievement. That assessment, and reporting about the age and appearance of the rock in which it was found, remain limited or disputed within the available reports, so they do not establish evidence of ancient life.12

Why it matters

For readers in Europe, the record illustrates the continuing reach of robotic exploration beyond Earth and the role of autonomous navigation in conducting science far from direct human control. The extended work at Jezero Crater may add evidence about whether Mars once had environments capable of supporting microbial life.2
