What's new

  • Portugal are scheduled to face Norway in Porto on October 4.
  • Ronaldo left after learning he would not start against Denmark.
  • Portugal then defeated Denmark 4-2 without him.
  • Bruno Fernandes rejected suggestions of divisions within the squad.

Portugal are scheduled to host Norway in Porto on October 4 in UEFA Nations League Group A4, days after Cristiano Ronaldo left the national-team camp upon learning that he would not start against Denmark, according to Al Jazeera.3

Departure overshadows perfect start

Ronaldo left after being told he would be omitted from the starting side for a second consecutive Nations League match, according to reports from all three outlets. Portugal subsequently won 4-2 in Copenhagen without him, following an earlier 2-1 victory in Oslo in which he remained an unused substitute.123

Ronaldo said in a published message that he would explain his decision later. “In due course, I will tell the truth to all the Portuguese people about my reasons for leaving the national team, to which I have always been dedicated,” he said. Al Jazeera also reported that coach Jorge Jesus said there was no rift between them.3

The BBC and The Guardian reported that Ronaldo’s international future remains uncertain. The BBC said he helped Portugal win Euro 2016 and two Nations League titles, including the 2025 final against Spain, which Portugal won on penalties after a 2-2 draw.12

Fernandes calls for unity

Bruno Fernandes, who wore the captain’s armband in the victory over Denmark, defended Ronaldo’s standing in Portuguese football. He said Ronaldo retained a place among the game’s leading players and in the affections of Portuguese supporters, while insisting that the episode had not divided the national team.123

Fernandes said the Portugal squad remains united. It is one and will remain so,” Fernandes said. Jesus also called Ronaldo a symbol of Portugal but said his immediate attention was on Norway, a side he described as one of Europe’s five best teams.123

Group A4 positions

Portugal had nine points and led Group A4 after victories over Wales, Norway and Denmark, Al Jazeera reported on October 3. Norway were second-bottom with three points. Portugal won the teams’ earlier meeting 2-1 in Oslo, with Ronaldo not used.123

Portugal’s Joao Felix scored in each of the side’s first three Nations League matches, while Goncalo Ramos, playing in Ronaldo’s place, scored in the previous two. Al Jazeera reported that Norway’s goals in the competition had all been supplied by Erling Haaland and Oscar Bobb.3

Al Jazeera listed Portugal winger Francisco Conceicao as doubtful with a thigh injury. Norway wing-back Julian Ryerson was also listed as doubtful because of a muscle problem, while centre-back Torbjorn Heggem was suspended.3

Why it matters

Portugal’s handling of Ronaldo carries wider significance because the BBC describes him as the country’s most-capped player and leading scorer, while reporting that his international future is in doubt. The Norway match will also test whether Portugal can extend a Nations League campaign that opened with victories over Wales, Norway and Denmark.2
