What's new
- Wiegman has agreed to remain England head coach through Euro 2029.
- The BBC reports that the agreement adds two years to her contract.
- Janneke Bijl, Arvid Smit and Darren Ward will continue working alongside her, according to the Guardian.
Sarina Wiegman has extended her tenure in charge of England’s women through the end of Euro 2029, according to reports published on 19 October 2026. The agreement keeps her with the national team beyond the 2027 World Cup in Brazil, for which England are still seeking qualification.123
Continuity through another European Championship
The BBC described the agreement as a two-year extension. The Guardian reported that Wiegman, who became England’s head coach in September 2021, has now extended her deal for a second time, with the prior agreement due to expire following the World Cup next summer.12
Wiegman welcomed the opportunity to continue with the players. “I am so happy to be able to carry on with this squad and cannot think of a better job in football,” she said. Her assistants Janneke Bijl, Arvid Smit and Darren Ward will also remain, the Guardian reported.12
Football Association chief executive Mark Bullingham praised her tournament record and said nobody was better suited to guide England into the next two competitions. England midfielder Keira Walsh had also expressed her support for Wiegman staying, telling the Guardian: “obviously I’d want her to stay”.12
World Cup qualification comes first
England must still secure their place in Brazil. According to the BBC, they defeated Greece 8-1 across two matches last week to advance to the second round of the qualifying play-offs. A victory over Ukraine in another two-legged tie would take them to the finals, both the BBC and the Guardian reported.12
The Guardian reported that the World Cup will take place in June and July. Wiegman said: “My main concern right now is absolutely the World Cup, and helping this squad realise their potential in the years to come.” FIFA also identified qualification as England’s immediate priority.23
Tournament record and squad renewal
Wiegman led the Netherlands to the European title in 2017, according to the Guardian. According to the BBC, Wiegman’s England secured their second European crown in a row by defeating Spain in the 2025 final. The Guardian said she had reached five successive major tournament finals, including two World Cups in which her teams finished runners-up.12
The longer contract also spans a period in which several established players will reach their thirties. According to the BBC, Lucy Bronze will be 37 and Alex Greenwood 36 by Euro 2029, while Leah Williamson and Walsh will be 32. According to the BBC, Wiegman handed first appearances to 24 players, but just three–Lucia Kendall, Lauren James and Hannah Hampton–went on to secure regular starting roles.1
Why it matters
The agreement keeps England’s coaching leadership in place through the next European Championship, rather than only through the World Cup. It also extends Wiegman’s tenure across the 2028 Olympics, where she could coach Team GB if they qualify, according to the Guardian.2
