Taylor Swift Adds Four New Songs to 'Showgirl: The Encore'

This week, Taylor Swift put out 'The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore', a four-song expansion of her 2025 record, on streaming platforms, pairing the release with a music video for lead single 'Patient Zero' scheduled around the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards.¹²⁴

Swift announced the expanded edition on Tuesday, telling fans, "The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore including four new songs is out on Friday." The new cover again features photography by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, and the release adds four tracks to the original 12-song album.²³

According to Swift, the songs emerged after she traveled to Sweden to celebrate the original album's success with collaborators Max Martin and Shellback, saying, "I took a trip to Sweden to celebrate with Max and Shellback, my two collaborators on this album." She described the writing as spontaneous: "there was a studio there and we did what we do when we feel anything at all: We wrote more songs." Consequence reported the new material was not left over from the original sessions, and Swift said the tracks were "born out of pure gratitude for your exuberance for and celebration of the album we made."²⁵

This follows Swift's earlier insistence, as Consequence noted, that the 12-track album was complete, telling fans, "There's not a 13th, there's not other ones coming. Adding or removing anything would upset the record's carefully constructed balance." Swift told Capital FM that 'Patient Zero' was inspired by a friend's account of being contacted by an ex's new partner seeking guidance, saying, "I was hanging out with a bunch of friends, and one of my friends told us that she had been reached out to by the new girlfriend of an ex of hers, asking for guidance." She sang, "I've been there. Felt the reeling, done the healing. she says she understands if he's making someone else hurt now I was patient zero." NBC News reported the song does not reference one specific former partner, though CBC noted fan speculation connecting it to Joe Jonas.¹⁴

Per CBC, 'Cleveland!' is said to be about Swift's husband Travis Kelce, with lyrics recalling him bringing her to Cleveland and introducing her to The Heights. and then wearing white despite any criticism, calling him the love of her life, a nod to the pair's Madison Square Garden wedding earlier in 2026. 'Pink Clouding' is theorized by fans, per CBC, to be addressed to Tom Hiddleston, with the line "Years later, I still wonder how to tell you sorry." 'Babylon' was described by CBC as concerning someone who left a small town in Virginia with regret, singing "You never knew that it was Babylon 'til it was gone."¹

A music video for 'Patient Zero' stars Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson, according to NBC News and CBC, and premiered around the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards. At the ceremony, Swift received the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors, described by Deadline as recognising artists with sustained influential work and a clear directorial voice; the original 'Life of a Showgirl' album is also nominated for Best Album at the same awards, according to Consequence.¹⁴³⁵

CBC noted mixed responses to the four new songs, quoting one social media user who wrote, "As a Swift fan, I find the four new songs quite disappointing."
