Hospital treatment
The death announcement followed an earlier account of his treatment in intensive care. The BBC reported on November 2 that De Miguel was receiving care at the University Hospital of Nuestra Senora de Candelaria for head and chest injuries. Tenerife had described him as “stable despite the severity of his condition”.1
The Guardian subsequently reported that Tenerife said his neurological condition had deteriorated. The club’s announcement gave the time of his death as 8am on Tuesday, November 3. The later announcement superseded the earlier report that he remained stable in intensive care.12
The BBC said De Miguel’s heart stopped while he was in the ambulance and that paramedics revived him en route to the hospital. The Guardian likewise reported that his heart stopped, adding that he received medical attention on the field for over five minutes before an ambulance took him away.12
Collision and abandonment
The BBC reported that the Spanish second division fixture was level at 2-2 when the incident occurred. Its account said Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono came out to intercept a long ball and that his knee appeared to make contact with De Miguel. The Guardian described contact with the striker’s chest in the closing minutes.12
Both outlets reported that Owono received a direct red card and that the match was abandoned. According to the Guardian, players from the two teams called for medical help after De Miguel lay motionless. The BBC described distress among players, with some Tenerife teammates crying.12
Club responses
Andorra initially issued a message of support and expressed hope that De Miguel would recover, the BBC reported. After his death was announced, Barcelona offered support to his family, friends and loved ones, while Real Madrid sent condolences to his relatives, teammates and club, according to the Guardian.12
De Miguel began his playing career with a debut for Leganés B in 2015, according to the Guardian. The BBC reported that he joined Tenerife from Castellon in 2025 and helped the club secure promotion to the second division.12
Why it matters
