Tragically Hip, Feist, Loverboy, Voisine Join Songwriters Hall of Fame

The Tragically Hip, Leslie Feist, Loverboy songwriters Mike Reno and Paul Dean, and Roch Voisine officially became members of the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame during a Saturday, Sept. 26, 2026, gala at Massey Hall in Toronto.¹³⁴

Billboard Canada reported in May that the induction ceremony would be held at Massey Hall, with the event presented by Amazon Music, according to that outlet. Nick Fedor said the Hall exists "to honour the songwriters whose work has shaped our culture."⁵

The Tragically Hip

Gord Downie, the Kingston band's frontman, died in 2017 following a terminal brain cancer diagnosis for which there was no known cure. At the induction, guitarist Rob Baker, 64, relayed a message from Downie and explained that the band credited every member equally as songwriters. Baker said the songs were written together as a group and released into the world like hundreds of children they had raised and sent out.¹²³⁴

Baker described the experience as strange and dreamlike, given that the Hall of Fame's ranks already include Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Gordon Lightfoot and Rush. He also read aloud an original piece describing himself standing before a gathering of songwriters, offering only drugs and alcohol as tribute, acknowledging that such offerings fell short and weren't the whole story, being told to wait his turn until called upon, and standing before that same group again, awestruck and grateful merely to belong. Allison Russell performed the Hip's Wheat Kings and blew a kiss to a microphone stand in tribute to Downie, while Our Lady Peace closed the show with a cover of Locked in the Trunk of a Car. According to one source, Jeff Tweedy is one of the best living songwriters.²⁶¹³

Feist, Loverboy and Roch Voisine

Leslie Feist, described as a Toronto indie music pioneer, was inducted at 50 years old. Finneas, the Los Angeles-based songwriter and producer who is Billie Eilish's brother, handled her induction and played her 2007 track My Moon My Man. Two of Feist's songs featured in the television show Heated Rivalry, and Charlotte Cornfield performed a rendition of her song How Come You Never Go There at the gala.¹³⁴

Loverboy's Mike Reno and Paul Dean were also inducted, with the band's 1980 hit Turn Me Loose opening the show in a rendition by Amanda Marshall and Talk later covering Working for the Weekend. According to the CBC, Mike Reno could not attend the ceremony. Scott Smith, the band's former bassist, died in 2000 following a boating accident. Jim Vallance, inducted alongside Bryan Adams back in 2022, remarked that the country has produced more great musicians than its size would suggest. Roch Voisine, 63 — a French-Canadian performer who played hockey before pursuing music and later studied at the University of Ottawa — joined Isabelle Boulay for a duet of his romantic song I'll Always Be There.¹³⁴

A fan's turning point

Raine Maida, who fronts Our Lady Peace, has said his career took a different direction after he witnessed The Tragically Hip play a 1988 industry showcase at Massey Hall called the Toronto Music Awards, an event he'd attended hoping to make business connections. Band members later described that 1988 performance as disastrous, yet it led to the Hip being signed. Maida, 56 and Toronto-born, said he later scrapped a prospective record contract he considered ruinous, adding that witnessing the Hip's set gave him the confidence to slow down and reassess his approach. Rather than chase a deal above all else, he said, he wanted to focus on the artistic side first, believing everything else would eventually follow.²

Maida, whose career spans more than three decades and over 10 albums, penned the track Ballad Of A Poet after seeing Downie play live, and his band Our Lady Peace has also previously recorded a version of Locked in the Trunk of a Car. He said of Downie's writing: "It's not just packaged so properly that it's, like, 'Oh, that's what it is.' Gord always allowed you to get inside those songs with him and see things." Ahead of the gala, Maida said, "Getting to honour literally one of my favourite bands and favourite singers, now that you're making me, like, talk about it, actually I'm starting to get nervous."²
