USA Rout Peru 4-1 to Open 2030 World Cup Cycle

The United States men's national team defeated Peru 4-1 at Inter&Co Stadium in Orlando on Saturday, in a match the Guardian described as the team's first outing of the 2030 World Cup cycle.¹²

Fast start, late flurry

Justin Ellis, a 19-year-old Orlando City attacker making his first appearance for the US, headed in a Gio Reyna free kick less than four minutes into the match to give the hosts the lead, according to the Guardian and U.S. Soccer.²⁴

Peru, according to the Guardian, equalized in the 14th minute when Gianluca Lapadula scored from close range, a moment ESPN and FOX Sports also confirm came in the first half.²¹³

The US restored its lead in the second half when a foul on debutant Zavier Gozo in the 65th minute produced a penalty converted by Malik Tillman, according to the Guardian. Julian Hall added a third goal shortly after entering the match, finishing from a Sebastian Berhalter cross, and Berhalter himself scored the fourth goal in the 90th minute.²¹

A squad built around debutants

According to the Guardian, eleven players received their first US cap in the match, one short of the program's all-time record of a dozen, which was set against Poland in 1973 and equaled 15 years later against Guatemala. U.S. Soccer reported that eight of the debutants were teenagers and that every US goal involved a player winning his first cap.²⁴

Cavan Sullivan, a 16-year-old Philadelphia Union player, started the match and played 60 minutes, according to the Guardian, which described his appearance as making him the youngest US player to feature in more than two decades. He picked up his first US yellow card after a collision with Peru goalkeeper Pedro Gallese in the 23rd minute. U.S. Soccer listed him as the fourth-youngest debutant in program history.²⁴

Julian Hall, described by the Guardian as the subject of a tug-of-war between the US and Poland over his international future, scored on his debut. Sullivan said of his first appearance, "It was a really special day," adding that he and his family still found it hard to believe he now represents his country at the senior level with the men's national team.²

Pochettino on the newcomers

Head coach Mauricio Pochettino, who signed a new four-year contract with U.S. Soccer in August according to FOX Sports, said he was pleased with Sullivan's display: "I am so happy with his performance," and "I feel really proud." He added that it was notable to see a 16-year-old compete so hard and play with such personality and character.³

Pochettino credited established players for helping integrate the debutants, saying the senior players deserved credit "in the way that they treat and guide and support and welcome" the newcomers, and separately telling FOX Sports the newcomers "were so comfortable on the field, but that is credit to the senior players because all the senior players were fantastic in the way that they welcomed and supported them."²³

Tyler Adams took on the captaincy for the first time in Pochettino's two years in charge, having previously led the side as captain at the 2022 World Cup, according to U.S. Soccer. Adams said of Sullivan's return to the squad, "It's great to have him back."²³⁴

Opponent in transition, and what comes next

Peru, according to the Guardian, are managed by Mano Menezes, who previously coached Brazil, and have missed out on the past two World Cups, entering the match ranked 60th in the world. The Guardian also reported that one in five Peru-born immigrants living in the US have settled in central and south Florida.²

The United States' next match is against Chile, scheduled for Sep. 29, according to ESPN and LA NACION/AFP. The Guardian reported that the squad was due to head to St Louis that Saturday night before the game at Energizer Park, while FOX Sports noted that the international window wraps up with matches against Mexico and Canada, and LA NACION/AFP reported that Peru is set to face Mexico during the same window.¹⁶²³
