A driver was taken into custody after a vehicle crossed a field during a youth soccer game in Wichita, Kansas, killing a child and an adult and injuring others, according to police accounts reported on October 17. Later reporting identified the location as Stryker Sports Complex.163
Later reports detail casualties
In its October 18 report, the Associated Press said the fatalities were a boy aged six and a man aged 35, while 11 people had been taken to hospitals. It described the driver as a woman and the vehicle as a truck carrying two children as passengers.2
The Guardian's October 17 account said the child died at the scene and that authorities were withholding the victims' names and ages until relatives could be notified. That report said the extent of the injuries was not yet known.1
The Jerusalem Post subsequently reported that 10 injured people had traumatic injuries believed not to be life-threatening. Its October 18 account also gave the hospital total as 11. The dossier does not provide further information about the condition of the other hospitalized person.3
Police seek evidence
Emergency dispatchers began receiving calls at 3:25 p.m. local time, according to Reuters. Police had the driver in custody, but had not released the driver's identity or announced charges in that report. The Jerusalem Post's later account likewise did not identify the driver or specify whether charges would follow.63
Wichita police captain Aaron Moses said he did not know the vehicle's speed or how it had entered the field, according to The Guardian. Officials were investigating, and police created an online portal through which people could submit video evidence of the incident.1
A witness cited by local station KWCH and quoted in The Guardian described a black pickup striking several people before coming to a stop between 100 and 200 yards farther along the fields. The witness also reported seeing dozens of emergency responders treating victims and performing CPR.1
Events suspended
The city canceled all events at the soccer complex until further notice, The Guardian reported. Wichita mayor Lily Wu expressed distress over reports from Stryker Sports Complex. Speaking at a news conference, Moses said: “This is a tragedy,” according to The Jerusalem Post.13
Why it matters
For European readers, the immediate significance is the loss of life at a youth sporting event and the injuries requiring hospital treatment. The reporting establishes those consequences, but does not yet explain how the vehicle reached the field.12
