What's new
- Thompson said on Oct. 5 that he would continue to lead CNN.
- Skydance’s announced leadership structure places Thompson in the roles of CNN Worldwide chair and editor-in-chief.
- Bari Weiss will separately remain editor-in-chief of CBS News.
Mark Thompson said on Oct. 5, 2026, that he would remain CNN’s chief executive when Paramount Skydance takes control of the network through its anticipated combination with CNN parent Warner Bros. Discovery. The decision was disclosed as the companies announced the leadership team for the combined business, which will be called Skydance.136
Separate leadership for CNN and CBS News
Under the leadership announcement, Thompson will be CNN Worldwide’s chair and editor-in-chief, and Bari Weiss will be editor-in-chief of CBS News. NBC News reported that the two would retain separate leadership positions and report to David Ellison and Ynon Kreiz, who are expected to lead the combined company. The Washington Post presented Thompson’s retention as an indication that an immediate combination of CNN and CBS News was not planned.468
The details of CNN’s place in the combined organisation remain unsettled. Thompson told employees that he could not yet answer every question about the network’s future, according to Variety. The Guardian reported that Paramount Skydance’s leadership intended to preserve CNN’s independent-news principles and allow Thompson to continue with his existing responsibilities and authority.12
Digital strategy and financial pressure
During Thompson’s tenure, CNN has concentrated on reaching younger viewers and building its digital and streaming operations, according to Variety and The Guardian. The network created CNN All Access, a direct-to-consumer subscription product, in October 2025 and has used the service to test formats. Variety also reported that Warner Bros. Discovery previously stopped CNN+, slowing the network’s streaming plans.12
Variety reported that Warner Bros. Discovery projected in a regulatory filing that CNN would produce $600 million in profit on revenue of $1.8 billion in 2026, compared with an earlier period when the network generated $1 billion in profit. Separately, The Guardian reported an expectation of broad job cuts across Paramount, including at CNN and CBS News, as the company seeks to reduce costs.12
Editorial independence
Thompson said he believed the incoming leadership would support the “independent news that CNN has always stood for”. Paramount has also committed to form a five-person board on news editorial independence no later than 180 days after the transaction closes. The board is intended to establish principles governing journalism and editorial conduct across the combined company’s news outlets.13
The Guardian reported that some CNN and CBS News employees questioned whether the planned board would have sufficient authority. It also said some CNN staff had worried that Ellison might place Weiss above CNN or shift the network in a more conservative direction, a concern Ellison dismissed. Both The Guardian and Variety reported relief among CNN personnel at the prospect of Thompson remaining in charge.12
Why it matters
CNN has a broader international footprint than CBS News, according to The Guardian, making its leadership and editorial arrangements relevant to audiences beyond the United States, including Europe. Thompson’s retention provides continuity, but the network’s corporate position, costs and operating structure under Skydance remain unresolved.12
