What's new

  • Russia said it was ready to assist the United States.
  • The offer included specialists, equipment and diagnostic tools.
  • US CDC funding of US$100 million was reported for measles response.
  • New York declared an emergency over measles on October 5.

Russia’s Rospotrebnadzor said on October 6 that it was prepared to help the United States tackle infectious-disease outbreaks, offering personnel, laboratory equipment and diagnostic and preventive tools. The announcement came as measles cases were reported across nearly all US states in 2026 and as the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was reported to have made US$100 million available to states for vaccination, testing and surveillance efforts.123

Russian offer

Rospotrebnadzor, Russia’s sanitary watchdog, said Russian specialists were available to assist the United States. It said the proposed support could include laboratory equipment as well as diagnostic and preventive tools, and described the initiative as a possible means of renewing joint Russian-US work against infectious threats. The agency said Russia had practical and scientific experience in safeguarding epidemiological well-being domestically and abroad.23

The watchdog’s statement referred to a worsening measles situation in three US states in recent weeks. It also cited four deaths in Pennsylvania in August and said New York state had declared an emergency because of measles spread on October 5. These accounts were reported by the Russian outlets and were not independently corroborated in the dossier.23

US measles response

The Straits Times said the US measles total was close to 4,000 on October 2, marking a figure far above any seen in decades. Nearly every state had reported cases during 2026, according to that report. Pennsylvania accounted for about one-quarter of US cases, and state officials said five people with measles had died there; the report also said two of those deaths were believed to have involved infections at birth.1

The CDC’s US$100 million funding infusion was intended to support immunisation programmes, testing and stronger measles surveillance, according to The Straits Times. Claire Hannan, who leads the Association of Immunisation Managers, said the funding was urgently needed because public-health budgets and staffing had been reduced. She said health departments need time to prepare vaccination sites, communicate with residents and undertake other response measures.1

Other diseases cited

Rospotrebnadzor also said that typhus and legionellosis had been reported in the United States since the beginning of 2026, and that typhoid fever cases had reached 205. It cited a fatal plague case reported in New Mexico in June and located in Santa Fe County. According to the agency’s account of CDC figures, the United States reports an average of seven plague cases each year, including fatal cases.2

Vaccination debate

The Straits Times reported that at least 95% vaccination coverage in a community is needed to limit measles transmission. It said the CDC had not mounted the public-information campaigns it would normally use during outbreaks. The report also said misinformation by officials about vaccine safety had worsened declining vaccination rates and contributed to outbreaks.1

The report said President Donald Trump had called in August for the combined measles, mumps and rubella vaccine to be divided into separate components. It said Trump claimed without evidence that the combined vaccines could be lethal, while Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. had repeatedly challenged the vaccine’s safety and made false claims about it.1

Why it matters

The offer places an infectious-disease response alongside a reported nationwide US measles outbreak and emergency measures in New York. For readers in Europe, it highlights Russia’s stated interest in reviving joint US-Russia work on infectious threats, although the dossier does not say whether the United States will respond or accept the assistance.23
