What's new

  • Russia announced the capture of three Kharkov Region settlements on Oct 1.
  • TASS reported an advance of about 100 square kilometres over the previous week.
  • Ukraine on Oct 2 published its latest estimates of Russian military losses.

Russian forces took control of Nesternoye, Rublenoye and Vysokaya Yaruga in Ukraine’s Kharkov Region, according to reports published on October 1 citing Russia’s Defense Ministry. TASS also reported that Battlegroup North had gained about 100 square kilometres in the region during the previous week, although that broader territorial estimate was not corroborated by the other sources in the dossier.235

Claims of a broader advance

TASS reported that Battlegroup North recorded the largest territorial gains among Russian formations during the previous week, taking about 100 square kilometres in Kharkov Region. The report attributed the assessment to Andrey Marochko, who based it on data issued by Russia’s Defense Ministry. The territorial figure remains a single-source claim.2

According to that report, Russian troops captured 13 localities over the week, including eight in Kharkov Region, three in the Donetsk People’s Republic and two in Zaporozhye Region. The tally is reported by TASS. The three latest Kharkov settlements – Nesternoye, Rublenoye and Vysokaya Yaruga – were, however, named in several reports citing the Russian ministry.235

Fighting in northeastern Kharkov

Russia’s Defense Ministry said Battlegroup North was narrowing an encirclement around Ukrainian formations in northeastern Kharkov Region while extending the surrounding area under its control. It also said fighting was continuing around Varvarovka, Grachevka, Reznikovo, Serdobino and Prikolotnoye. These descriptions came from Russian military reporting and were not supported by a Ukrainian account in the dossier.23

The ministry said Battlegroup North had struck 11 Ukrainian brigades and one regiment across the Kharkov and Sumy regions during a 24-hour period. Russian accounts also claimed attacks on Ukrainian units near Nefedovka, Nikolayevka and Khatneye, as well as strikes against drone facilities and deployment areas. Europa Press noted that the Russian announcement it cited offered no further operational details or information about possible casualties.235

Competing loss reports

Russian military reports gave several figures for Ukrainian personnel and equipment losses, including a claim that Battlegroup North caused more than 250 personnel casualties and destroyed three armoured combat vehicles. Another Russian account put Ukrainian losses inside the reported encirclement at up to 30 service members, three armoured vehicles and one ground robotic system over 24 hours. The dossier provides no independent confirmation of those figures.23

Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence issued a separate estimate on October 2, saying total Russian personnel losses since February 24, 2022, had reached approximately 1,537,390. It estimated that Russia lost 1,520 personnel, 1,470 unmanned aerial vehicles and 37 artillery systems on October 1. Those figures are Ukrainian estimates and are not corroborated by the other dossier sources.4

Other Russian operational claims

TASS also reported that Russian air defences destroyed 650 Ukrainian unmanned aircraft and seven guided bombs during a 24-hour period. Previous Russian reporting claimed that FPV-drone crews of the 6th Guards Combined Arms Army knocked out over 80 hidden Ukrainian communications aerials and Starlink terminals in Kharkov Region. Both accounts were reported by Russian sources.2

Why it matters

The reports indicate a claimed expansion of Russian control in a Ukrainian border region, but the scale of the advance remains supported by only one Russian source. For European readers assessing the battlefield picture, the sharply different Russian and Ukrainian loss reports also underline how much of the available information consists of claims by the combatants.2345
