Hegseth Orders 20% Cut to US Generals and Admirals

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed plans to reduce senior military leadership by a fifth, citing a need to end what he called a "woke" culture, as the country remains engaged in a war with Iran.

What's new

  • Hegseth confirmed a 20% reduction in generals and admirals, combining a 10% firing rate with a 10% cut to overall positions
  • Elon Musk, Palmer Luckey and Newt Gingrich were named co-directors of Project Meridian, a new taskforce on future warfare
  • A new four-star Autonomous Warfare Command is set to become operational by October 2027
  • Democratic Senator Mark Kelly criticised the dismissals as a loss of military leadership experience

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed on September 30, 2026, at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia that the Pentagon will cut 20 percent of its general and admiral positions, combining firings with a reduction in the overall number of senior posts, as the United States remains engaged in a war with Iran.1485

The scale of the cuts

Hegseth said the reduction would be achieved in two parts. "The number-crunchers say we fired 10 percent of the generals and admirals across the force," he said, adding that an additional 10 percent cut would come from eliminating general officer slots altogether. "So the total comes to a 20 percent cut overall. The media calls that a purge. I call it accountability," he said.8

Pentagon data referenced in news coverage put the number of serving generals and admirals at 851 as of July 2026, part of a total exceeding 800 senior active-duty posts across the armed forces. The plan is intended to affect roughly 800 general and admiral positions across one- to four-star ranks by January 1, 2027, doubling a 10 percent reduction Hegseth had already ordered the previous year.386

Reporting indicates that at least 20 generals, admirals and top civilian defense officials have either been dismissed or stepped down since Hegseth took the role, with some accounts citing more than two dozen leaders ousted or forced into retirement since January 2025 — among them Joint Chiefs chairman Air Force General CQ Brown and Navy chief Admiral Lisa Franchetti, who both left their posts in February 2025.3129

"No longer the woke department"

Hegseth framed the cuts as part of a broader cultural overhaul of the department. "This department has moved past being woke or weak," Simple translation of that? That means rejecting anyone overweight, unfit, unkempt, odd, timid or extreme. Just warriors," he said. He also told personnel, "I want central casting. The ideological clowns are out. True patriots are welcome, backed by hormone screening," he added.1

News accounts have also claimed Hegseth obstructed career advancement for Black service members and women within the military, and that the administration removed both women who held four-star rank at the time. Hegseth has defended the staffing overhaul as essential for reshaping institutional culture, stating, "A culture can't be transformed by keeping the very people responsible for it." Personnel is policy at every single level."3102

Mark Kelly, a Democratic senator from Arizona, criticised the dismissals, saying, "We need strong leaders. These are individuals with years of accumulated expertise, among the finest commanders our armed forces have produced. And he's pushing them out." Kelly further noted, "By dismissing so many admirals and generals, we're sacrificing a substantial share of an entire generation's worth of top-tier leadership," adding that the military's real need is sharper leadership rather than increased testosterone.12

Analysts cited in reporting noted that the number of senior officers has not declined in proportion to the overall shrinking of the armed forces since the Cold War. Walter Ladwig observed, "The force has shrunk substantially since the Cold War ended, yet flag officer ranks haven't shrunk to match." Coverage further pointed out that eliminating a post doesn't automatically mean its current occupant is immediately pushed out, and while a leaner command structure might ease bureaucratic burdens, it risks lowering morale and making officers hesitant to offer honest counsel.26

Context: war, leaks and a new command

This came as the US, per news reports, was entering its seventh month of an unresolved conflict with Iran, with tensions between the nations extending to disputes over the Strait of Hormuz as a key shipping route. Hegseth claimed American forces had wiped out Iran's naval, aerial and defensive military capabilities, yet Iran kept carrying out drone and missile strikes regardless of that assertion.529

Hegseth also unveiled plans for a new four-star command dedicated to drone and robotic combat operations, the Autonomous Warfare Command, targeted to launch by October 2027, alongside updated fitness standards and the scrapping of diversity initiatives. The National Guard was separately ordered to cut 20 percent of its top positions. These moves came after prior controversies, among them Hegseth's disclosure of upcoming Yemen strike plans via a Signal group chat in March 2025, and roughly 50 Joint Staff members being polygraphed that August as internal suspicion grew, according to reports; the Pentagon separately probed leaks and tightened press access.7196

Musk and the future-warfare taskforce

Hegseth also appointed Elon Musk, Palmer Luckey and Newt Gingrich as co-directors of a new taskforce called Project Meridian, intended to identify the capabilities required for technological dominance on future battlefields, including how new technology could be used in untested terrains such as subterranean depths and the Moon. Both Luckey, who heads Anduril Industries, and Musk have significant ties to the defense department through sizable company contracts, with Anduril reportedly pulling in billions in government business within the last year.4

Musk's appointment follows a period in which, according to reporting, his tenure leading the Department of Government Efficiency gutted federal agencies without achieving its stated cost-cutting goals, drawing public criticism and boycotts of his products; his inclusion in the taskforce was described as a reconciliation with the Trump administration. Gingrich, previously a member of the defense policy board under the earlier Trump administration until his removal within three months of Biden's inauguration, has for decades since the 1990s cautioned that an electromagnetic pulse strike could endanger America's electrical grid.4
