On Sunday, France's far-right National Rally announced that it had secured sufficient seats in indirect elections for the Senate to establish its first-ever parliamentary group in the upper chamber, with the party and its allied party, the Union of the Right for the Republic (UDR), together winning a record 14 seats.421
A historic breakthrough
Elections held on Sunday renewed 178 of the French Senate's 348 seats across 64 constituencies, with the Interior Ministry recording 1,686 candidates. For the first time in its history, National Rally and its allies surpassed the minimum of 10 seats required to establish a parliamentary group, building on its Senate presence that began with two seats in 2014 and grew to three by 2023.4216
According to an AFP tally cited by one outlet, nine National Rally senators were elected on Sunday, effectively quadrupling the party's Senate presence when combined with its three sitting senators. Two senators from Eric Ciotti's UDR, which is allied with National Rally, were also elected, and party officials said the combined RN-UDR group would have roughly 14 members.16
Marine Le Pen, the National Rally leader and a declared candidate in next year's presidential election, hailed the results. She said the outcome exceeded expectations and represented what she called "une victoire historique et une étape majeure", adding that the party's new Senate group would speak for what she described as forgotten territories, rural areas and mayors distant from decisions made in Paris.2589
Jordan Bardella, the National Rally president, said the party was pleased to enter the Senate for the first time and framed the result as part of the run-up to the presidential campaign.6
Conservatives keep control
Even with the far right's advances, the conservative Republicans and their allied lawmakers appeared poised to hold onto their majority in the Senate, continuing as the chamber's biggest political bloc with 131 members according to one source. Gerard Larcher, the 77-year-old Les Républicains figure who has led the Senate for more than a decade, was expected to be re-elected as its president the following week.3127
Other parties also made gains. France Unbowed, a hard-left party, won Senate representation for the first time, with Gabriel Amard elected in Rhône and Marc Péré elected in Haute-Garonne. The communist group retained 18 seats. Eric Ciotti, who departed Les Républicains in 2024 following his push for a partnership with the far right, said his new Senate group would represent opposition to what he described as the Senate's stagnant and ineffective conformism.16
