Thousands of residents evacuated because of the Norte Fire in Southern California were allowed to return home, Associated Press reported on October 17, 2026, as firefighters improved containment. The blaze spread from San Clemente into San Juan Capistrano, prompting evacuations affecting about 16,000 people.3
Returns begin, with restrictions remaining
In its October 17 update, CAL FIRE said the Norte Fire had scorched 570 acres and was 5% contained, while designated areas of both communities remained under evacuation orders. The agency identified the Orange County Fire Authority as responsible for the response.5
Bloomberg, reporting through the Los Angeles Times, said authorities allowed 3,700 residents to return on Saturday morning and had lifted nearly all evacuation orders. Its account said Via La Mirada north of Esperanza remained closed to vehicles. The official update continued to list zones under evacuation orders.45
The Guardian reported that at least six homes had burned or sustained damage and that two firefighters had been hospitalized with heat-related injuries. Orange County Fire Authority chief TJ McGovern said there were “no reports of resident injuries or deaths thus far”. The BBC’s account reported one firefighter with heat exhaustion.12
Wind and dry vegetation
McGovern attributed the fire’s rapid movement to wind, weather and terrain, according to the Guardian. A National Weather Service alert for critical fire weather in portions of Southern California remained in effect until Saturday night. Strong gusts, low humidity and dry vegetation were creating conditions conducive to wildfire spread.12
Bloomberg reported Saturday morning temperatures in the fire area in the mid-80s and winds of about 15 mph. It also reported that California had secured emergency disaster assistance from FEMA to support suppression of the Norte Fire.4
Other fires and electricity outages
The BBC reported 13 fires burning across California. Among them, the Bryson Fire reached 147 acres in the Santa Monica mountains, triggering evacuations and drawing more than 400 firefighters, according to its account. Bloomberg reported that all Bryson evacuation orders and warnings were lifted and closed roads reopened.24
According to the Guardian, the Henderson fire covered 3,132 acres, with containment reaching 35%. Bloomberg said at least one building had been destroyed. The cause remained unknown and under investigation, according to the Guardian.14
Electricity disruptions extended beyond the evacuation areas. The Guardian reported that Pacific Gas and Electric had proactively disconnected nearly 62,000 customers across 26 northern California counties. Bloomberg reported that tens of thousands of residents remained without electricity on Saturday.14
Why it matters
For European readers following the California emergency, the consequences include displaced households, damaged homes and electricity interruptions. Permission for thousands to return did not mean all restrictions had ended: CAL FIRE’s update still listed evacuation zones.135
