What's new

  • Trump announced a $1 million reward, conditional on an arrest and conviction.
  • Reports said the White House had not explained how the reward would be funded.
  • The offer accompanies administration challenges involving ballots and election certification.

US President Donald Trump offered $1 million for information about voter fraud that results in an arrest and conviction, in a Truth Social announcement reported on October 26, 2026. The proposal comes ahead of the United States’ November 3 midterm election.134

Payment conditions, but few operational details

Trump described the offer as covering earlier elections as well as the coming midterms, according to accounts of his post in the Guardian and the Straits Times. The Guardian also reported that he repeated the proposal to reporters before boarding Air Force One to travel to a campaign rally in Mississippi.12

How the proposal would operate remained unclear. Bloomberg reported that Trump had not identified a route for submitting information or explained who would decide whether a claim met the conditions for payment. It said the White House declined to elaborate on his social media announcement. NBC News likewise reported that the White House supplied no further funding details.34

The offer concerns a subject on which Trump has repeatedly made unsupported claims, according to the Guardian. NBC News reported that there was no evidence of widespread voter fraud and that voting by noncitizens was rare. Those findings are distinct from the administration’s allegations about particular voters and ballots.14

Disputes over state elections

The administration has also pursued challenges involving state election procedures. According to the Straits Times, Trump intended to challenge the formal approval of Alaska’s Senate result in the event of a Republican defeat. Bloomberg reported that he had urged Republicans to bring voting under national control and sought restrictions on voting by mail.23

In developments reported on October 27, the Guardian said the administration asked Washington state to exclude ballots from more than 400 people it alleged were registered without US citizenship. The newspaper also reported that a federal appeals court rejected an administration request to prevent California from counting ballots from 20,000 registered voters it alleged were noncitizens.1

Democratic state attorneys general increased their coordination against potential federal intervention in elections, the Guardian reported. California Attorney General Rob Bonta accused the administration of “politicizing and weaponizing the law”. His criticism concerned its efforts to restrict voting by people it alleged were noncitizens.1

Other financial proposals

The election-fraud reward is separate from an information programme intended to combat fraud. The Straits Times put that programme’s proposed value at $25 million. Bloomberg reported that Trump said he would personally decide who received payments under that separate initiative.23

Trump has also promised a $5,000 payment to every American adult if Republicans keep control of Congress. The Straits Times reported that the proposed payment would cost more than $1 trillion and would probably need congressional approval. Neither that promise nor the separate information programme explains the funding or administration of the voter-fraud reward.234

Why it matters

For European readers following the US midterms, the offer sits alongside disputes about federal involvement in elections administered by states. The Straits Times reported that the administration was seeking greater federal control over that process; the reward’s funding and reporting procedures remained unexplained.2
