China and North Korea open border bridge after decade-long delay

The New Yalu River Bridge has opened to traffic after remaining unused since its completion in 2014, according to CNA. Its role in expanding trade will be constrained by sanctions, analysts said.

What's new

  • China and North Korea opened the New Yalu River Bridge on October 15.
  • Trucks crossed the bridge as the two countries marked its official opening, CNA reported.
  • Chinese premier Li Qiang said the crossing would support economic cooperation, according to CNA.

China and North Korea opened the New Yalu River Bridge across their shared river border on October 15, 2026, bringing into use a trade crossing delayed for more than a decade. Trucks travelled across the bridge as the countries marked its official opening, according to CNA.1235

A crossing completed years before opening

According to CNA, construction of the three-kilometre crossing finished in 2014, though it did not enter service until now. The BBC said its launch had originally been planned for 2014, before North Korea stopped work on the roads and customs facilities needed on its side.12

The new crossing offers an alternative to the Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge. According to CNA, that older bridge, about 10 kilometres upstream, remains the busiest of roughly 15 crossings along a border extending approximately 1,350 kilometres. The BBC reported that the new bridge is expected to become the principal land route for bilateral trade.12

Xinhua reported on the opening ceremony. Li Qiang, China's premier, said the bridge would support economic cooperation, improve border clearance and strengthen exchanges, according to CNA. North Korean premier Pak Thae Song also addressed the event by video, the outlet reported.235

Trade prospects and sanctions

No country conducts more trade with North Korea than China. Bilateral trade totalled $2.7 billion last year, according to the BBC. Separately, CNA said China exported goods worth $2.3 billion to North Korea last year, 25 per cent more than a year earlier.12

The opening does not remove the sanctions limiting commerce. CNA reported that United Nations sanctions restricted flows of goods and workers over North Korea's missile and nuclear weapons development. The New York Times described the opening as part of an expansion of trade despite international sanctions.24

Speaking to CNA, Lim Eul-chul of the Institute for Far Eastern Studies at Kyungnam University said the crossing would not restore trade to pre-sanctions levels right away. He said it would help transport heavy equipment, raw materials and energy products needed for North Korean development.2

Transport links resume

The opening follows other renewed transport connections. According to the BBC, Air China restarted direct Beijing–Pyongyang flights in March after six years, and the countries resumed passenger trains that month. Chinese president Xi Jinping visited Pyongyang in June and met North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.1

The BBC cited professor Leif-Eric Easley as interpreting the opening as evidence that relations were improving, while also seeing the lengthy delay as a sign of the difficulties Beijing faces in dealing with Pyongyang. The crossing's opening therefore accompanies renewed contacts without establishing how quickly trade will grow.1

Why it matters

For European readers, the opening is a development in trade with a country subject to international sanctions. The distinction between improved transport capacity and permitted commerce matters: analysts cited by the BBC and CNA cautioned against expecting an immediate return to larger-scale trade.124
