What's new

  • At Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium, Paris Saint-Germain secured a victory by four goals to two.
  • The BBC reported that PSG now have two wins from two Champions League matches.
  • According to the Guardian, Haaland scored twice and Ferran Torres had a late penalty saved.

On 14 October, Paris Saint-Germain claimed a 4-2 Champions League victory away to Manchester City, and the BBC said the defending European champions had therefore won their first two games of this season’s competition.12

Three goals before the interval

The Guardian’s account described a first half in which PSG scored three times without reply. Désiré Doué opened the scoring with a low effort from outside the penalty area, before Ousmane Dembélé headed in the visitors’ second goal just 75 seconds later.1

Vitinha then added the third with a low shot, according to the Guardian, which credited Warren Zaïre-Emery with providing the assist through a backheel. Those goals left City facing a three-goal deficit at the interval, before manager Enzo Maresca made three substitutions.1

PSG’s selection also reflected their representation on the Ballon d’Or shortlist. The Guardian reported that seven members of Luis Enrique’s starting side were among the 30 shortlisted players, with another three nominees available among the substitutes.1

Haaland scores twice

City’s first goal came from Erling Haaland, with substitute Iliman Ndiaye supplying the assist, according to the Guardian. PSG subsequently scored again through Maghnes Akliouche, whose effort from outside the area was the visitors’ fourth goal of the match.1

Haaland scored City’s second, completing a two-goal contribution that the Guardian said also included two near misses. His goals reduced the deficit but did not overturn PSG’s advantage, and the match ended with the visitors winning by a margin of two goals.12

The Guardian also reported a late penalty miss by Ferran Torres, identifying Gianluigi Donnarumma as the goalkeeper who saved it. PSG had other opportunities of their own: the same outlet’s account recorded Achraf Hakimi hitting the post and failing to convert a one-on-one chance.1

Guardiola watches from the stands

Pep Guardiola attended the match after leaving Manchester City at the end of the previous season, according to the Guardian. The former manager was seated near City chair Khaldoon al-Mubarak and chief executive Ferran Soriano as Maresca’s team faced PSG.1

Both outlets reported the same final score, while their coverage placed different emphasis on the match. The Guardian focused on the rapid goals from Doué and Dembélé; the BBC highlighted City’s efforts to recover and reported PSG’s second victory in as many Champions League games this season.12

Why it matters

For followers of European football, the result gives the defending champions another victory in their Champions League campaign. According to the BBC, PSG have won both of their opening two matches this season.2
