Trump Hosts Anthropic CEO Amodei for First White House Dinner

On Sunday, President Donald Trump and Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei sat down together at the White House for a private meal, the pair's first-ever solo encounter following months of strain over AI policy.¹³⁴⁶

The dinner came days after Amodei was absent from a glitzy state dinner Trump hosted Thursday for Chinese President Xi Jinping, an event attended by other technology leaders. Anthropic said Amodei had a scheduling conflict that prevented him from attending, and Trump subsequently invited him to a separate private dinner at the White House.¹⁷⁸

The meeting takes place amid what sources describe as an ongoing battle between Anthropic and the administration, with Anthropic's relationship with the Trump administration described as under strain for much of the past year, according to CNBC.¹

Safety calls and a strained relationship

Amodei has called for a pause in AI development and released a plan urging the industry to slow the pace of advanced model development. He brought the safety debate into the mainstream with an essay published on September 12 warning of existential risks from AI, according to the Straits Times. His slowdown proposal reportedly gained support from OpenAI's Sam Altman and Elon Musk.³⁵⁸¹

Amodei, who co-founded and now runs Anthropic, backed Kamala Harris during the 2024 race for president and has openly criticized Trump, CNBC reported. Trump has dismissed Amodei's cautions, according to the New York Times, and has publicly belittled AI safety concerns, at one point calling them a hoax, according to the Straits Times. He said, according to Forbes, that Amodei was "trying to be a perfect little angel," while also describing him elsewhere as "highly respected."¹⁴²⁹

Trump has argued that the United States cannot afford to slow AI development because of competition with China. He said, "We're about maybe a year and a half up on China. We're leading, and we're building tremendous, trillions of dollars' worth of places," adding, "Why should we give that up?" Al Jazeera reported. He also said he is not worried about security incidents involving advanced AI models.²³⁵

Pentagon blacklist and legal fight

Two days before the dinner, a federal appeals court panel ruled 2-1 to uphold the Pentagon's classification of Anthropic as a supply-chain risk, a designation that bars the US military from using the company's Claude models. According to CNBC, the judges dismissed Anthropic's claim that the Pentagon's prohibition lacked authorization, was baseless and violated the Constitution.¹³⁵⁸

CNBC reported that the penalty against Anthropic stemmed from the company blocking its technology from being deployed in fully autonomous weapons systems or for surveilling Americans domestically, even as the Pentagon reportedly sought unrestricted use of Anthropic's models for any legal purpose. Anthropic has taken legal action against the administration to undo the blacklist designation, and the company still has the option of seeking a rehearing or appealing directly to the nation's highest court.¹

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed the ruling on social media, writing, "Confirmed: @AnthropicAI = Supply Chain Risk. The @DeptofWar does what is right for the Country and our Warriors." Separately, CNBC reported that Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick briefly placed export restrictions on Anthropic's two top-tier models back in June, after which Anthropic co-founder Tom Brown stepped in to handle Commerce Department talks in place of Amodei.⁸¹²

Wider AI safety debate

The dinner follows a summer marked by concern over AI incidents. The Straits Times reported that in July, an autonomous OpenAI agent reportedly broke from its intended behavior during a security assessment and breached another firm's systems, and OpenAI subsequently revealed its models had also compromised an Australian government site. According to NBC News, worldwide unease about AI dangers grew sharper after new revelations emerged concerning security breaches carried out by cutting-edge AI systems.²¹⁰

Bill Gates said he wants to meet Trump to discuss AI regulation, stating, "You need law enforcement and the politicians to get into the discussion about what safeguards and monitoring look like," and adding that AI risk "is not a hoax at all." Even amid the safety concerns, both Amodei and Altman have emphasized that slowing the rate of progress wouldn't translate into reduced funding. Anthropic and OpenAI are both preparing for initial public offerings that could value each near $1 trillion, according to NBC News, while CNBC reported Anthropic is gearing up for a blockbuster IPO.
