Trump Launches AI-Powered America.gov Federal Services Website

President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Tuesday launching America.gov, an AI-powered government services website, and directing federal agencies to integrate their public-facing systems with the new platform, according to Bloomberg.¹

Launch event

The site was unveiled at a day-long event at Washington's Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium, where U.S. Chief Design Officer Joe Gebbia told CNBC the chatbot runs on artificial intelligence supplied by Google and by Elon Musk's company. Gebbia said, "We have great partners behind the scenes," and pointed out that roughly 40 million people visit a government website each day hoping to accomplish something. He added that most people would probably agree the experience leaves much to be desired, according to CNBC.²

Trump described the launch in expansive terms, saying, "It's not just simply a website. It brings back what America originally promised its people, while reshaping government for this century and the ones ahead," according to CNBC. He also told the audience, "With America.gov, the federal government no longer stands in your way, and it stands only at your service," and called it "the ultimate product," according to The Hill. Jim Kelly of Google Public Sector said the company is "leveraging Gemini to help more than 100 million people access critical public resources with greater speed and ease," according to Google's official blog. The Independent reported that Trump spoke at an event hosted by Tony Robbins.²⁵⁷³

Executive order and scope

Under the order, agencies whose covered services exceed 100,000 annual users must integrate with America.gov, while IRS tax filing and defense and intelligence services are excluded, according to PANews. The Hill reported that the project has been in development since the early days of Trump's second administration, and that the federal government currently maintains more than 10,000 forms and tens of thousands of websites. Trump said the goal was to replace "the endless maze of tens of thousands of terrible government websites and rules, and more than 10,000 forms" with "one front door for every single question," according to The Hill.⁶⁵

According to The Hill, officials say every response the site gives draws from official government sources, no personal data is gathered or kept, and the platform is designed to be immune to hacking. PANews reported that the platform includes data minimization mechanisms for privacy protection. Trump said the site was "built from the ground up with your privacy and security totally in mind," according to The Hill.⁵⁶

Planned features

The Independent reported that designers presented a video showing future functionalities, including passport renewal and a one-click system for obtaining official documents, though these are not yet available. The chatbot itself states that passport renewals through the site are expected to become available in 2027. See what's coming," according to The Independent. The Hill reported that by 2027 the site is expected to let users complete forms, applications and renewals, including Medicare enrollment and passport applications. Trump promised the tool "is going to save you tremendous time," according to The Independent.³⁵

Chatbot answers and Trump's statements

The Boston Globe reported that answers generated by America.gov, drawn from official government sources, diverge from several claims Trump has made publicly. The chatbot states that official federal sources do not indicate widespread fraud altered the 2020 presidential election outcome, even though Trump has repeatedly and falsely blamed his 2020 loss on fraud; the Globe noted that multiple audits and recounts turned up no meaningful fraud and that Trump's own administration had deemed the election legitimate.⁴

The Globe also reported that the chatbot notes "The 22nd Amendment says that no person shall be elected President more than twice," after Trump told NBC News there are "methods which you could use to seek a third term," despite having already been elected twice, in 2016 and 2024. That same day, per the Globe, Trump signed an order renaming the Department of Defense the Department of War, having previously dismissed its existing name as "woke," even as the chatbot still refers to the Pentagon as the Department of Defense's headquarters. The Globe also reported that the chatbot's information credits human-driven greenhouse gas emissions as a major cause of recent warming, at odds with Trump's earlier dismissal of climate change as a hoax, and that Trump that same day instructed the EPA to review the legal standing of its endangerment finding.⁴
